There was a time this was just assumed. Then there was a time this was a big selling point. Now there are very few products that are actually mass produced in the good old US of A. One of the few companies that held out longer than some was Cannondale.
They were real big on the whole Made in USA thing and had it as part of their selling campaign. Maybe 10 months ago they started taking production offshore and more recently they went completely offshore. As much as this is a shame I admit I have greatly benefited from the situation. Thursday of this week I went to the auction of the manufacturing equipment that Cannondale used to produce their frames. I left with some real gems and one of them is a pneumatic frame clamp. This is the greatest 3rd hand a fabricator could ask for. I have always gotten a bit frustrated when brazing a bike and trying to re-clamp the frame with the torch in my hand. This is no longer an issue. This was made by one of the many talented machinists that worked in the tool room at the facility and I will think of him/her every time I use. Here it is now mounted on my floor and getting used daily ( I added the leather for smooth action).
Next week we go pick up the other super cool stuff!
