What we’re doing

We are implementing a "profit share" type of model where 5% of sales of every full price Engin Cycles component, frame, and water bottle sold through our webstore will be donated to an organization of our choosing. From June until October 2020, that organization will be the Philadelphia chapter of Black Lives Matter.

The plan is to change what organization will receive the funds every few months, based on new needs arising and to mark certain occasions. We feel that this method will allow us to keep donations going in a sustainable way, and keep us engaged in the activism that we want to support. We'll be updating this page to post how much we've donated in a given month to which cause and to show what cause is currently being supported.

Details may change or new developments may emerge as we go, and we’ll update this page to reflect that as well. We hope you’re as excited as we are about this new facet of Engin Cycles as a company. If you have questions or comments about this system, get in touch, we’re here to listen and learn.

• October 2020’s donation was diverted from the original intended recipient NDN Collective, to the Amistad Law Project in response to the unrest surrounding the murder of Walter Wallace Jr. here in Philadelphia. We believe the Amistad Law Project does important work in the effort to dismantle the prison industrial complex.

• In order to offer wholesale to dealers, we can’t make the same 5% donation on wholesale orders, but we would encourage our dealer and frame builder partners to engage with this kind of ongoing mutual aid in any way they are able.

Why we’re doing this

In the wake of the protests after the murder of George Floyd that started at the end of May 2020, we took a long hard look at what were doing and what we were able to do. Being a small company we weren’t able to give to the causes we wanted to in huge sums, but if we set aside a portion of each product sold to be for donations, we thought we could make it work. So we decided to pursue that and build it into our business model. We want to support causes we feel are important and we want our work to do so as well, this lets us do that.
